General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) is proud to announce the launch of this year’s GPRA Northern Territory Scholarships – designed to attract and support general practitioners (GPs) in training across the NT.
The scholarships underscore GPRA’s ongoing commitment to fostering the next generation of exceptional GPs in the Northern Territory.
Applications are now open for the following 2025 scholarships:
Dr Debbie Stach Northern Territory GP Registrar of the Year Award
Ada Wilmadda Parry Aboriginal Health Scholarship
Professor Alan Walker Paediatric Scholarship
GPRA Northern Territory Rural and Remote Scholarship (targeting interstate doctors to train and practice in the NT).
GPRA President Dr Chris Dickie expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative and encouraged eligible GP trainees to apply.
“Building on the success of last year’s inaugural scholarships, we are once again thrilled to deliver these opportunities,” said Dr Dickie.
“They not only support current NT-based GP registrars, but also aim to attract prospective registrars to the NT.
“Attracting and retaining GPs in the NT and other remote areas has been a long-standing challenge.
“These scholarships reflect our dedication to nurturing exceptional talent so that NT communities can access quality healthcare.”
Dr Siobhan Hensey, GPRA Board Director and NT-based GP, highlighted the transformative impact of the scholarships:
“Training in the NT was a life-changing experience for me. I fell in love with the people, the work, and the environment,” she said.
“These scholarships provide future GPs with the opportunity to experience the same rewarding journey.
“By honouring the legacies of remarkable individuals like Dr Debbie Stach, Ada Wilmadda Parry, and Professor Alan Walker, we are empowering the next generation of GPs to make a lasting impact on healthcare in the NT.”
The scholarships include:
Dr Debbie Stach Northern Territory GP Registrar of the Year Award
This prestigious $10,000 award commemorates the life and legacy of Dr Debbie Stach, who tragically passed away in 2004 shortly after completing her GP training in the NT. The award recognises a GP registrar enrolled in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program who demonstrates excellence in medicine, a commitment to improving Indigenous health outcomes, and outstanding professionalism.
Ada Wilmadda Parry Aboriginal Health Scholarship
Named in honour of Ada Wilmadda Parry, a pioneering Cultural Educator in the NT, this scholarship supports up to two GP registrars ($5,000 each) who demonstrate a strong commitment to improving Indigenous health outcomes and enhancing cultural competence.
Professor Alan Walker Paediatric Scholarship
This scholarship honours the significant contributions of Professor Alan Walker to paediatrics in the NT. It supports up to three GP registrars ($5,000 each) annually who are pursuing further education in paediatrics and demonstrate exemplary professional behaviour and dedication to paediatric care.
GPRA Northern Territory Rural and Remote Scholarship
This annual scholarship is designed to attract two prospective GP registrars to the NT ($20,000 each), particularly those committed to practising in remote and very remote locations (MMM6-7). It reflects GPRA’s focus on addressing the critical shortage of GPs in rural and remote areas.
“We encourage all eligible GP registrars to seize this unparalleled opportunity to advance their careers and make a meaningful difference in NT communities,” added Dr Dickie.
Applications for all scholarships are now open and will close on 24 April 2025.
