Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies hailed a major success

The inaugural Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies has been hailed a resounding success, drawing in a huge crowd of 2,000 visitors over the long weekend.

The festival celebrated the unique and stunning landscapes of the Flinders Shire region and showcased an array of activities, live music, workshops, food, art, and entertainment.

Festival highlights included a dinner under the stars, a celebrity BBQ competition, bull rides, and a raft race participated by 15 teams.

One of the most enchanting moments of the weekend was the lantern release, which brought together locals and visitors in a collective celebration of the beauty of the Outback skies.

Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara said the festival was the culmination of months of hard work, and she was thrilled with the outcome.

“We wanted to create a tourism drawcard that was unique, and we succeeded beyond our wildest expectations,” said Mayor McNamara.

“The Festival of Outback Skies had something for everyone, from traditional events to quirky activities, which we hope will continue to attract a wide variety of people to the region."

Mayor McNamara added that she saw a great future for the festival, with Hughenden confirming its status as a must-visit destination for tourists seeking a unique outback experience.

“This festival has been the most significant event in Hughenden since the Dinosaur Festival, which last ran 15 years ago,” she said.

“It drew visitors from all over the country who appreciated the vast horizons and skies that make the region unique.

“I’m sure it now has a future place on the Outback tourism calendar.”

Flinders Shire Council had expected around 1,000 people to attend the festival, but the overwhelming response has exceeded all expectations.

"The festival was a true celebration of the region's unique identity and heritage, and its success highlights the growing interest in the Outback,” Mayor McNamara said.

“We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support the festival, including volunteers and sponsors, and look forward to welcoming visitors back for future events.”
